The word carat is of extreme importance in the world of jewellery, but when we’re talking about the world of diamond jewellery it has a double meaning. Both gold and diamonds are valued with carats/Karats, but the meaning is quite different.
When we’re talking about gold, Karat refers to the purity of the precious metal. A 24-Karat ring is made of nearly 100% gold, while 18-Karat gold is made of 18 parts gold and 6 parts another metal.
How big is a one carat diamond?
For diamonds carat refers to the weight of the stone. A one carat diamond equals 0,2g. This might not sound like much, but in the world of diamonds we’re already talking about pretty serious numbers.
How big a one carat diamond will look is largely dependent on the diamond shape. For example a one carat round brilliant diamond has a width of 6,5 mm. Some other diamond shapes are far less compact. For example a marquise diamond is cut to be a longer shape. A one carat marquise diamond would be about 10 mm x 4,75 mm. In the right setting it would likely look bigger than the round brilliant diamond.
One carat diamond price
Just like the size of the diamond the price is also based on the shape of the cut. A one carat princess or marquise cut diamond will be cheaper than the popular round brilliant diamond of the same weight. For an overview of diamond prices you can check out our loose diamonds section.
1 carat diamond engagement ring
To illustrate the size of a 1 carat diamond in an engagement ring we’ll give you two amazing examples. The first is a 1 carat diamond solitaire ring. This 18-Karat gold ring is set with a single brilliant cut diamond of 1 carat. The ring itself is quite simple and elegant to let the diamond shine the brighter.
A one carat diamond ring isn’t just limited to a single stone, you could also go for an ‘entourage” ring. This diamond ring shaped like a flower has a total weight of 1,15 ct, but it looks a lot bigger than the solitaire ring due to the large surface of diamonds.
1 carat diamond earrings
One carat diamond earrings can also look very different. While it is uncommon to have large diamonds in earrings it is normal to combine several smaller ones. By spreading them out the earrings will look a lot lighter and have more room to shine. However when the diamonds are set closer together the earrings will pack a lot more punch.
