Why you should always buy certified diamonds

Whether you buy a diamond for a special occasion or as an investment, always make sure you buy a certified diamond. If a diamond isn’t accompanied by an internationally recognized certificate like those from the Diamond High Council (HRD) or the International Gemmological Institute (IGI); you can’t be sure of its origins or authenticity which will make it hard if not impossible to sell the diamond later on for a reasonable price.

Buying certified diamonds as an investment

Diamonds last forever. Therefore you could make some profit by investing in diamonds. According to an international study*, between 1999 and 2010, white diamonds provided annualized real returns of 6.4%, and between 2003 and 2010 they returned 10%. By contrast, global stocks returned an annualized minus-0.1% between 1999 and 2010, and global bonds returned 3.3% during that period.

When you buy a certified diamond from Diamondland, it always comes with an international certificate of the Diamond High Council ( HRD ) or the International Gemmological Institute ( IGI ). GIA certificate can also be delivered upon demand. A diamond certificate or diamond grading report, is a complete evaluation of your diamond describing objective factors, both qualitative and quantitative, and an almost infinite combination of all of the variables, based on the 4 c’s (cut, clarity, colour, and carat), measurements, and physical properties.

HRD Diamond Certificate

The Diamond High Council is the official representative of the Belgian diamond trade and industry. The HRD issues three kinds of diamond certificates:

  • The HRD diamond certificate, which guarantees the authenticity of a diamond and thus rules out the possibility of it being an imitation or a synthetic diamond.
  • The HRD diamond identification report, which is intended for diamonds less than 1.00 ct.
  • The HRD diamond colour certificate focuses on the specific characteristics that determine the value of colour diamonds, such as the colour description, the colour design and the luminescence.

IGI Diamond Report

The IGl Diamond Report is a certificate attesting the authenticity of a diamond. It provides a reliable and accurate statement of the diamond’s identity and grade based on an internationally recognized system.

GIA Diamond Report

The GIA Diamond Grading Report contains scientifically determined information on diamond shape, clarity, colour, cut, carat weight, proportions and finish. It also identifies any known treatments that were used to enhance the diamond.
