Sun Drop diamond sold at auction for 8 million euro: a record

The Sun Drop diamond is one of the biggest diamonds in the world and has the highest possible colour grading: fancy, vivid yellow. This week it is sold at a Sotheby auction in Genève for 8 million euro, which is a record for this type of jewel. It is the eighth most expensive diamond sold at auction.

Characteristics of the Sun Drop

The Sun Drop is a 110,3-carat diamond with a vivid yellow colour. It was found last year in South Africa and put up for sale by Cora International. Experts rated it as a diamond with an extraordinary colour grading. Yellow diamonds are created when nitrogen impurities trapped within carbon molecules: a process of millions of years.
